What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care – the art & science of diagnosis, treatment & prevention of disease using natural therapies. Focusing on prevention, patient education and treatment of the underlying cause of disease, naturopathic doctors support & stimulate the body's inherent ability to heal. The patient is seen as a whole person, rather than a condition or symptom. Physical, mental and emotional factors are taken into consideration when developing a treatment plan. Patient education combined with individualized care result in a comprehensive approach to health and well-being.

How are naturopathic doctors trained?

Naturopathic doctors have a minimum of 3 years university-level premedical studies. Following this are 4 years of education at a recognized school of naturopathic medicine, with courses of study including medical sciences such as physiology, anatomy & biochemistry, and naturopathic therapies such as nutrition, botanical medicine & acupuncture. By graduation, over 4500 hours of classroom and supervised clinical work are completed. Graduates must pass international licensing exams before licensing is granted.
